LCBC Wraps Up Monarchs’ Assembly, Targets Regional Peace

The Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Ambassador Maman Nuhu, has officially closed the inaugural two-day meeting of Traditional Rulers and Customary Authorities of the Lake Chad Basin, held in Maiduguri from January 27 to 28, 2025.

In his closing remarks, Amb. Nuhu described the gathering as a resounding success, emphasizing its significance in fostering dialogue, regional collaboration, and addressing critical cross-border challenges confronting the Lake Chad Basin. “This inaugural meeting has achieved its objectives, serving as a crucial platform to discuss peacebuilding, social cohesion, and conflict resolution,” he stated.

The event witnessed an impressive turnout of traditional rulers and stakeholders from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic. Amb. Nuhu extended heartfelt gratitude to the participants, highlighting their valuable contributions to developing joint initiatives for sustainable peace and coexistence.

He commended the Governors of Yobe and Borno States, Mala Buni and Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, for their sponsorship and unwavering support, which significantly bolstered the meeting’s success. He also acknowledged the wisdom and leadership of the traditional rulers in providing insights on promoting social harmony and preventing violent extremism.

Amb. Nuhu expressed appreciation to the technical and financial partners, including PROLAC and MCRP national coordination teams, as well as representatives from the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), for their active participation and contributions.

Reflecting on the theme, “Fostering Sustainable Peace through Traditional Rulers in the Lake Chad Basin,” the Executive Secretary underscored the shared challenges faced by the region security, environmental degradation, and humanitarian crises and the need for collaborative solutions. He encouraged the participants to integrate traditional knowledge with modern strategies to advance the Regional Stabilization Strategy (RSS) for long-term peace and development.

Amb. Nuhu thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his encouragement and support. He also commended the organizing committee and the host state Yobe but by extension Maiduguri tje Borno State capital for their meticulous efforts in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.

Mr. Nuhu urged the participants to inspire hope within their communities and reaffirmed the LCBC’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of people affected by the region’s crises. The event was attended by dignitaries, including Royal Highnesses, technical and financial partners, UNDP representatives, PROLAC and MCRP coordinators, and members of the media.

Ambassador Maman Nuhu officially declared the meeting closed, wishing all attendees a safe journey back to their respective destinations.
