Borno State has launched 650 electric vehicles as part of an ambitious plan to transform its transportation sector and promote sustainability.
The initiative, unveiled by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum during the presentation of the 2025 budget at the State House of Assembly, includes 50 electric buses, 100 e-cars, and 500 e-tricycles.
The move is aimed at addressing high transportation costs, reducing environmental pollution, and improving access to affordable and efficient transportation in Maiduguri and other areas of the state. The electric vehicles are expected to provide relief for residents struggling with rising fuel costs and limited public transport options.
Under the new system, government-subsidized buses will charge N50 per passenger, while electric taxis will cost N100, making transportation more accessible to low-income earners.
The introduction of e-vehicles also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the project is anticipated to create job opportunities for drivers, technicians, and support staff.
Governor Zulum emphasized the government’s commitment to building the infrastructure needed for the success of the initiative, including charging stations and maintenance facilities.
This milestone marks a significant step toward a greener and more efficient transportation system in Borno State.
