At least eight people have been killed and five others rescued following a deadly clash between farmers and herders in Gulma town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday, describing it as a violent confrontation triggered by a dispute over farmland destruction.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the crisis erupted when a herder, identified as Yaron Buba Dogo, allegedly allowed his cattle to stray into the farmland of one Alhaji Aminu Ala, damaging crops.
A heated argument reportedly followed, during which the farmer was fatally stabbed in the neck.
The killing sparked outrage in the community, with an angry mob allegedly descending on the herder, killing him and setting his body ablaze. The violence quickly escalated, leading to retaliatory attacks that claimed several more lives.
Police said that despite swift intervention by security operatives, four additional persons were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition. Two more corpses were later recovered from a nearby farmland, bringing the death toll to eight.
Amid the chaos, security personnel rescued five trapped residents, including a woman, and evacuated them to safety at the Argungu Police Station.
Following the bloodshed, a joint security team was deployed to the area, while the state government imposed a curfew to prevent further violence and restore order.
The Police Command said calm is gradually returning to Gulma as patrols and surveillance operations continue across the affected communities.
Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, assuring that all those involved in the killings would be identified and brought to justice.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
