Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s emphatic endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to retain Vice-President Kashim Shettima as his running mate has reinforced what political analysts describe as the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) strategy of projecting continuity, regional balance and internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a strongly worded appreciation message, the Borno governor thanked President Tinubu for once again placing his confidence in Shettima, describing the decision as a reward for loyalty, competence and dedicated service to the nation.
But beyond the message of gratitude lies a broader political calculation.
Observers say the early reaffirmation of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket is designed to calm political uncertainties within the ruling party while consolidating support across the North-East, a region regarded as one of the APC’s major electoral strongholds.
For many analysts, retaining Shettima eliminates speculation over the vice-presidential slot and signals that the President is determined to campaign on the strength of continuity rather than political experimentation.
Zulum, speaking on behalf of the government and people of Borno State, said the President’s decision had been received with excitement across the state, describing it as recognition of a son whose political journey has become intertwined with Borno’s resilience.
He recalled that Shettima governed the state during one of the most challenging periods in its history, earning national recognition for steering Borno through the height of the Boko Haram insurgency before moving to the nation’s second-highest office.
According to the governor, the Vice-President’s re-nomination is more than a political appointment; it is a reflection of confidence in experience, commitment and the enduring contribution of the North-East to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
