Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has reaffirmed his commitment to standing by wounded soldiers and the families of military and police personnel who have lost their lives in the fight against insurgency.
He made the pledge on Monday while hosting Mrs. Lilian Ogogo Christopher Musa, President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), at the Government House in Maiduguri.
DEPOWA, which brings together wives of officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police, was in Borno for the launch of the “Thank You Troops” campaign — an initiative dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of frontline operatives, providing assistance to those wounded in battle, and supporting families of fallen heroes.
Governor Zulum declared himself a proud champion of the initiative, promising open collaboration with DEPOWA to ensure that injured officers, widows, and orphans receive meaningful support.
“My doors will always be open to partner with you in giving our wounded soldiers, widows, and orphans the care and sense of belonging they deserve,” he assured.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made by troops in liberated communities such as Baga, the governor stressed his administration’s determination to resettle more displaced populations as a way of consolidating the gains made by security forces. He also advocated for creating opportunities for troops to spend time with their families, noting the long and difficult deployments endured by many.
Zulum commended the Chief of Defence Staff, other service chiefs, the Theatre Commander, and all troops for their resilience and gallantry in restoring peace to the Northeast and beyond.
Mrs. Musa, in her remarks, applauded Governor Zulum for his unwavering and practical support to the military and security agencies. She highlighted his interventions for widows, orphans, and scholarship schemes for children of the fallen as exemplary acts of leadership.
She described the “Thank You Troops” campaign as a nationwide movement to recognise and celebrate the courage of Nigerian soldiers, starting in Borno — the epicentre of the fight against insurgency — as a tribute to the state’s resilience and the governor’s leadership.
Mrs. Musa pledged DEPOWA’s continued partnership with the state in improving the welfare of widows, orphans, youths, and vulnerable groups within and outside military communities.
