Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Government and people of Gombe State over the tragic death of seven journalists in a fatal road accident.
The Governor conveyed his message of sympathy through his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, during a condolence visit to Jalo Waziri House in Gombe, where he met NUJ officials led by the National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, alongside management and staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Gombe station.
Describing the loss as “devastating and heartbreaking,” Governor Zulum said the death of seven media professionals at once had plunged the journalism community and the nation into mourning.
“I was deeply shocked to hear the news of the death of seven journalists, most of whom are staff of the Nigerian Television Authority, in a tragic motor accident,” the Governor said. “My prayers and thoughts are with the government and people of Gombe State, the NUJ, the NTA, their families, and the entire community of working journalists.”
He prayed for the repose of the departed souls and for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.
Responding, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, expressed gratitude to Governor Zulum for standing with journalists in their moment of grief, noting that the loss transcends Gombe State and touches the entire nation.
“On behalf of all working journalists, we sincerely appreciate Governor Zulum for dispatching his media adviser to condole us over the loss of our colleagues,” he said. “We are indeed grateful.”
After the visit, the Special Adviser accompanied the NUJ President, NTA General Managers from Gombe, Damaturu, Bauchi and Birnin Kebbi, as well as union members, on condolence visits to the families of the deceased across Tabra, Tudun Wada and Tumfure areas of Gombe town, where prayers were offered for the departed.
Dauda Iliya also paid a separate condolence visit to the Director-General of Press Affairs to the Gombe State Governor, Isma’ila Uba Misili, reinforcing solidarity between Borno State and Gombe in a moment of profound national loss.
