Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development as he flagged off the reconstruction and upgrade of Alau Dam in Alau Village, Konduga Local Government Area.
The project, valued at N80 billion, was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restore the dam’s capacity, improve water supply, and enhance agricultural activities. Governor Zulum described the project as a crucial step toward ensuring food security and economic revitalization, noting that years of neglect and security challenges had significantly reduced the dam’s efficiency.
He commended the Federal Government for its swift intervention and assured that the project would be executed with the highest standards of transparency and accountability. He urged the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to consider executing both phases of the project simultaneously to maximize its impact.
Governor Zulum also called on residents to support the contractors and engineers, emphasizing that the project belongs to the people of Borno and will directly benefit them. He assured that his administration would provide the necessary support to facilitate its timely completion.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun, described the project as a landmark initiative that aligns with the federal government’s commitment to sustainable water management and agricultural development. He emphasized that the rehabilitation of Alau Dam will not only enhance irrigation for farmers but also provide a more reliable water supply to communities, industries, and public institutions in Borno State.
Professor Terlumun assured that his ministry would work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the timely and effective execution of the project. He urged the contractors to prioritize quality and efficiency while also engaging local labor to create job opportunities for the host communities. The minister reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to supporting similar initiatives across the country to strengthen food security and climate resilience.

The event was attended by key government officials, including the Sheju of Borno, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun; the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Habiba Kyari; Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources, Abdulaziz Yari; members of the National Assembly; top government functionaries; and the Shehu of Borno.
