…… Urges Action on Security, Flood Relief, and Road Safety an Trailer Movement Restrictions in Maiduguri

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Borno State Council, has released a communiqué following its State Congress held on December 23, 2024. The Congress commended the Borno State Government’s sustained efforts in addressing security challenges and protecting residents but called on security agencies to step up their vigilance against the illicit activities of street gangs known as “Malians,” particularly during the festive season. Areas such as Ngomari, Abbaganaram, London Cikin, Bulumtukutu, and Gwange were identified as hotspots requiring intensified surveillance.
In response to the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri, the Congress urged the state government to ensure equitable and efficient distribution of aid to all victims, particularly those who have not yet been reached. It stressed the need for a review of claims to guarantee transparency and accountability in relief efforts.
Highlighting the persistent transportation challenges in Maiduguri, the NUJ applauded the government’s inclusion of additional buses in the 2025 budget, aimed at easing public transport difficulties, particularly during rush hours. Similarly, the Congress raised concerns over the dangers posed by speeding trailers within the state capital. It advocated for regulatory measures restricting trailer movements to nighttime hours to mitigate accidents.
The NUJ further called for the immediate reopening of the blocked exit lane of the Kano-Maiduguri dual carriageway near the Nigeria Air Force base or the creation of an alternative route. It noted that the closure has resulted in increased accidents and commuter fatalities.
The Congress also commended the ongoing revival of the Sports Writers Association and encouraged journalists to explore diversification opportunities, particularly in agriculture, to supplement their income and navigate the country’s economic challenges.
Recognizing the exceptional leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum, the Congress lauded his proactive response to the recent flooding crisis and his commitment to the welfare of Borno residents. It expressed gratitude for the appointment of former NUJ Chairman Comrade Daudua Iliya as the Governor’s Official Spokesman and Special Adviser on Media, pledging the Union’s full support to ensure his success.
Signed by Abba Kaka Abba Massa, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, the communiqué also acknowledged the remarks of the NUJ National President, who described the Borno Council as a foundational pillar of the Union in the North-East.
