Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched the distribution of food and relief items to Christian internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Wulari IDPs Camp and to vulnerable Christian families in host communities within Maiduguri metropolis.
The intervention, aimed at easing hardship and promoting inclusiveness, is part of the state government’s efforts to ensure that Christian communities celebrate the Christmas season with dignity, hope, and a sense of belonging, despite the economic challenges they face.
Flagging off the distribution exercise, Governor Zulum said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to compassion, shared humanity, and peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths in Borno State.
According to the governor, a total of 1,605 Christian IDPs across camps in the state will each receive 25 kilograms of rice, clothing materials, and a gallon of cooking oil. He added that 5,000 bags of 25kg rice, 1,000 cartons of noodles, and 1,000 gallons of cooking oil would also be distributed to poor and vulnerable Christians living within host communities.
Governor Zulum assured that the scope of the intervention would be expanded in the coming year, stressing that the gesture was not only about Christmas, but about strengthening unity and compassion across religious lines.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to maintain Borno State’s long-standing record of religious harmony, noting that both Islam and Christianity preach peace, tolerance, and mutual respect.
The governor also assured Christian leaders that churches destroyed by insurgency and yet to be reconstructed would be completed, adding that government remains committed to supporting faith based institutions affected by the conflict.
While calling for effective coordination within religious leadership structures, Governor Zulum pledged continued engagement with recognized Christian bodies to ensure inclusive governance and responsive intervention.
He further promised to study submissions presented by Christian leaders and convene follow-up meetings to address their concerns.
Governor Zulum was received at the event by the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State Chapter, Bishop Bogna Bakeni, alongside the Chairman of CAN North East, Bishop Mohammed Naga, and other Christian leaders.
In his remarks, Bishop Bakeni expressed deep appreciation to the governor for what he described as a rare and thoughtful gesture.
He said the governor’s presence and support ahead of Christmas had renewed hope, confidence, and a sense of inclusion among Christians in the state.
According to him, the intervention demonstrated Governor Zulum’s commitment to equity, compassion, and unity, assuring that the Christian community would continue to support peace building efforts and pray for the progress of Borno State.
