Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has called for enhanced regional collaboration to consolidate gains in peacebuilding, security, and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Region.
Speaking at the 5th Governors’ Forum held in Maiduguri today, Zulum highlighted the region’s strategic importance, describing it as “the future of Africa” due to its youthful population and economic potential.
The Forum, which first convened in 2018, has evolved into a key platform for cross-border cooperation. It has fostered dialogue on regional challenges and opportunities, including climate change, displacement crises, and food security. Zulum reaffirmed Borno State’s commitment to the Forum’s objectives, emphasizing ongoing investments in infrastructure, security, and livelihoods.
He also acknowledged the contributions of international partners such as the UNDP, UNHCR, WFP, and donor countries including Norway, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. While celebrating progress made, he urged stakeholders to sustain their support in addressing the region’s pressing humanitarian and developmental needs.
The event featured high-level discussions on cross-border trade, climate resilience, and stabilization strategies, with Zulum participating as a panelist alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture.
