Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has hailed the Nigerian Armed Forces for eliminating a top ISWAP commander, Abu Fatima, during a decisive military offensive in Aleru community, Kukawa Local Government Area.
The Governor made the commendation while addressing journalists in Monguno on Tuesday, shortly after returning from a one-day working visit to Kukawa. He described the killing of Abu Fatima and his comrades as a “significant breakthrough” in the ongoing war against terrorism in the region.
Abu Fatima, a notorious insurgent leader, had for years unleashed terror on innocent civilians—blocking farmers from accessing their lands and terrorising petty traders across local markets. His death, Zulum stated, is a “major relief” for thousands of displaced residents and a crucial step toward restoring peace and enabling safe community resettlement.
“I must commend the gallantry of our Armed Forces, the Civilian JTF, and local volunteers for bravely taking the fight to the heart of the insurgents’ hideouts. Their sacrifices are yielding results,” Governor Zulum declared.
During his visit, the Governor toured Baga, Kukawa, and Cross Kauwa, where he assessed the security situation, met with troops, and pledged continued support. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and assist security agencies with timely intelligence on suspicious activities.
Governor Zulum emphasized that his administration remains committed to working closely with the military and other stakeholders to achieve lasting peace across Borno.
“This fight is not only for the military—it is a collective responsibility,” he said.
