…Says viral Sharia court claim is a baseless hoax by mischief-makers
The Zamfara State Government has firmly debunked a viral report claiming that a young woman named Zainab is scheduled to appear before a Sharia court for converting to Christianity.
In a strongly worded press statement issued on Tuesday, Governor Dauda Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, described the claim as “mischievous fake news” aimed at inciting religious tension.
“The attention of the Zamfara State Government has been drawn to this fabricated story spread by an online platform notorious for falsehoods,” the statement read. “There is no such case before any Sharia court in Zamfara State.”
Idris clarified that thorough checks with judicial and security authorities, including the Grand Khadi of the Zamfara Sharia Court of Appeal, confirmed that no such case ever existed. He also revealed that the woman in the photo circulated alongside the false report is not even Nigerian, but an American named Aalia from Texas.
Blasting what he called “yellow journalism,” the governor’s spokesperson accused the source—allegedly Sahara Reporters—of engaging in reckless and divisive storytelling to drive traffic and stoke religious unrest.
“This is the handiwork of enemies of peace. We urge security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement concluded.
The government called on the public to disregard the fake report and continue to promote peace and unity across religious lines.
