In a decisive move set to reshape the academic future of Yobe State’s premier university, the Yobe State Government has approved the appointment of Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University (YSU), Damaturu.
The approval was granted by Mai Mala Buni, following a recommendation by the University’s Governing Council at its extraordinary meeting held on January 15, 2026. The decision, confirmed by the Chairman of Council, Ahmed Goniri, takes immediate effect.
A statement announcing the development said the governor acted in line with due process after the Governing Council carefully considered the recommendation at its Damaturu sitting.
Professor Tahir, a renowned Professor of General Surgery and Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to the job. Until his appointment, he served as the Medical Director of the Ultra-Modern Police Hospital, Damaturu. He takes over from Bukar Jamri, who had been steering the affairs of the institution in an acting capacity.
Observers say the appointment signals a fresh chapter for YSU, with expectations high that Professor Tahir will strengthen academic standards, research output, and institutional stability.
In a related development, the Governing Council also approved the appointment of Mallam Isa Audu Dallari as the substantive Registrar of the university.
According to the statement, the appointment followed the recommendation of the Selection Committee and was made in accordance with the Yobe State University Law, 2006 (as amended). Mallam Dallari, until now, served as Director of Administration at YSU.
With the simultaneous appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, stakeholders believe Yobe State University is poised for renewed administrative efficiency and academic growth—marking what many describe as a strategic reset for the institution at a critical moment in its development.
