A Yobe State teacher, Gambo Lawan, has brought pride to the state after emerging as the Best Teacher in the North-East at the 2026 Federal Ministry of Education National Teachers Award Ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The prestigious event celebrated outstanding teachers across the North-East region for excellence, dedication and innovation in teaching. Lawan’s exceptional performance earned her the top regional honour and a cash prize of ₦25 million, making her one of the biggest winners at the ceremony.

The Yobe State government has continued to celebrate the achievement, describing it as a testament to the state’s growing investment in education and human capital development.

Officials of the Yobe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) explained that the selection process was rigorous, transparent and based strictly on merit, professionalism and measurable impact in the classroom.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Umaru Hassan-Babayo, applauded the awardee for projecting Yobe State positively on the national stage, noting that her success underscores the state’s emergence as a serious player in western education.

In addition to the national cash prize, the awardee has also been granted a tertiary education scholarship in recognition of her outstanding performance at the summit.

An elated Gambo Lawan pledged to work even harder, promising to deepen her commitment to teaching and to impact more knowledge and values in her students.

The latest honour comes just months after three students from Yobe State — Nafisa Abdullahi, Rukayya Muhammad-Fema and Hadiza Kashim-Kalli — clinched victory at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals in London, competing in spelling bee contests, writing challenges and knowledge quizzes.
