Cracks have emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State as a party chieftain, Hon. Ibrahim Mohammed Ibbiyo, has openly rejected alleged moves to impose a successor to Governor Mai Mala Buni ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
In a blistering statement titled “Yobe 2027 and the Search for a Credible Successor,” Ibbiyo accused forces within the state government of promoting “anointed candidates” through media campaigns, warning that any attempt to bypass party guidelines would be fiercely challenged — even in court.
The APC stalwart was reacting to a Daily Trust publication profiling potential successors, which he described as a “sponsored narrative” allegedly designed to project preferred aspirants linked to the government, including Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali.
Ibbiyo argued that Yobe’s future must not be tied to “godfather politics,” insisting that competence, credibility and capacity — not loyalty — should determine who emerges as governor.
“Attempts to impose candidates will fail. The APC constitution is clear — we will resist any manipulation of the process,” he declared.
Throwing his weight behind Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, Ibbiyo described the lawmaker as the “standout choice,” citing his legislative experience, grassroots connection and strong youth support across the state.
He maintained that Bomai’s emergence would also satisfy zoning considerations, noting that Yobe South (Zone B) — which he said holds over 50 percent of the state’s population — is next in line for the governorship slot.
The chieftain, however, took a swipe at some of the perceived frontrunners, questioning their experience and capacity, while also criticizing long-serving Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan as “politically exhausted.”
While acknowledging a few credible figures within the race, Ibbiyo warned against what he termed a “dangerous drift” toward imposition, stressing that such a move could fracture party unity and weaken the APC’s electoral chances.
He concluded with a rallying call to party leaders at both state and national levels to safeguard internal democracy, declaring: “Yobe needs a unifier with proven capacity — not a placeholder imposed to serve narrow interests.”
