Senator Abdulaziz Yari has called for the urgent preservation of Hausa language in Nigeria’s school curriculum, warning that the nation risks losing its cultural identity without deliberate action.
The former Zamfara State governor made the passionate appeal in Argungu, Kebbi State, during the launch of the book “A Kingdom in Crisis: KABI in the 19th Century,” authored by the late Muhammad Bello Alkali and reviewed by Professor Alkasum Abba.
Speaking as the Chief Launcher, Yari stressed the need to document history accurately and safeguard indigenous heritage, noting that the Hausa language faces the threat of gradual erosion if not embedded firmly in the nation’s education system.
“The preservation of our language is key to protecting our history and identity,” he declared, urging policymakers to prioritise local languages in school curricula nationwide.
The high-profile event drew top dignitaries and showcased strong financial backing for intellectual development. Senator Yari made headlines by purchasing 150 copies of the book at a staggering ₦150 million.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, also demonstrated support by acquiring 100 copies at ₦50 million, while other guests made generous donations.
A major highlight of the colourful ceremony was the conferment of an award of honour on Yari by APC youths in recognition of his leadership and contributions to party growth and regional development. The award was presented by Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, to loud applause from attendees.
Originally a Master’s thesis submitted in 1969 at Ahmadu Bello University, the book has now been published under the Arewa House Studies Series, further cementing its historical significance.
The event not only celebrated scholarship but also reignited conversations on cultural preservation, with Yari’s call for Hausa language inclusion in schools resonating strongly among stakeholders.
