A powerful windstorm has wreaked havoc on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Gombe State, leaving scores of corps members stranded and vital facilities in ruins.
The violent storm, which struck late Wednesday evening, tore through hostels, classrooms, and administrative buildings at the camp located in Amada, Akko Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as roofs were ripped off, trees uprooted, and property worth millions destroyed within minutes.
“It was terrifying. We had to run for cover as the wind tore through everything,” a corps member recounted.
The Gombe State NYSC Coordinator confirmed the incident, noting that while no lives were lost, several corps members sustained minor injuries and have been treated. Authorities are assessing the damage as temporary accommodations and feeding arrangements are being made for the displaced.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has directed immediate intervention, assuring affected corps members of the state’s support. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is also expected to step in.
This disaster has disrupted the ongoing orientation exercise, with concerns rising over the safety of the makeshift structures amid the rainy season.
The NYSC management is appealing for urgent federal assistance to restore camp facilities and ensure the welfare of corps members.
