As the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) navigates through one of the most challenging periods in its history, questions arise about whether its current president, Joe Ajaero, might inadvertently weaken the organization.
The NLC, a formidable force in Nigerian labor rights advocacy, has historically been a unifying body for the working class.
However, recent events and decisions under Ajaero’s leadership have sparked debates about the future of the Congress and its ability to continue effectively representing the interests of Nigerian workers.
Ajaero’s Rise to Power
Joe Ajaero, who was elected as NLC President in February 2023, came to the role with a reputation for being a fierce advocate for workers’ rights.
Before his election, he served as the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), where he was known for his unyielding stance against government policies perceived to be anti-labor.
His election as NLC president was seen as a victory for more radical elements within the labor movement, who believed that his leadership would bring about a much-needed reinvigoration of the Congress.
Challenges Facing the NLC
However, Ajaero’s tenure has been marred by significant challenges. The Nigerian labor landscape has been turbulent, with the country facing unprecedented economic hardships, including inflation, unemployment, and the removal of fuel subsidies.
The government’s recent policies have placed enormous pressure on the NLC to act in defense of workers’ interests, often leading to clashes between the Congress and the government.
Under Ajaero, the NLC has been involved in several high-profile protests and strikes, most notably the nationwide strike over the fuel subsidy removal in May 2023.

The future of the NLC under Ajaero’s leadership is uncertain. While his approach has garnered support from some quarters, the growing divisions within the Congress and the challenges posed by Nigeria’s economic situation could undermine the effectiveness of his leadership.
