A faction of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, and five other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The announcement came on Saturday in Abuja during a press briefing addressed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who spoke on behalf of the factional NWC.
Anyanwu said the decision followed what the group described as “incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgment” by the suspended officials.
> “We decided to suspend the National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Ilya Damagum, for incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgment. He has been suspended for one month and should face the Disciplinary Committee,” Anyanwu stated.
He further revealed that Mohammed Abdulrahman, the National Vice Chairman for the North Central region, has been appointed as the Acting National Chairman.
Others suspended include the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba; Deputy National Vice Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja; National Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyenguikoro; National Youth Leader, Sulaiman Kadade; and Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo.
According to the faction, all six suspended officials are to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Committee within 30 days to defend themselves against allegations of misconduct and insubordination.
Political observers view the development as a major escalation of the internal crisis within the PDP, heightening tensions between the Wike-led bloc and loyalists of the embattled National Chairman, Damagum.
