Sokoto Governor’s wife task parents on accessing HPV vaccinations

Wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajia Fatima Ahmad, has urged parents to ensure that girls have access Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccinations to safeguard their health.

Ahmad made the call while flagging off HPV vaccination campaign on Friday in Sokoto.

Represented by Chief Medical Director of Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Dr Hadiza Tori, Ahmad said the vaccine would prevent girls from servical cancer and improved their future wellbeing.

She described the virus as deadly and stressed the need for government, donor agencies, NGOs and community groups on increased awareness on accessing the HPV vaccine.

” urge our children and our future to come out and get vaccinated to protect your future from Cervical Cancer,’ governor’s wife said.

She assured increased committment to partnership as well as other activities toward improving healthcare service delivery more especially on the lives of women and children in the state.

The Executive Secretary Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SSPHCDA) Dr. Larai Tambuwal, Identified breast and cervical cancer as leading diseases that caused women death globally.

Tambuwal noted that servical cancer is preventable through HPV vaccine and advised mothers to shun rumours going against the campaign and ensure that their children from 9-14 years access the vaccine.

She said HPV was the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract, causing more than 95 per cent cases of cervical cancer.

“HPV vaccine will be provided in schools within communities and in health facilities in the state to enhance access,” Tambuwal said.

Newsmen reports that the Executive Secretary demonstrated her committment through vaccination her two biological daughters with vaccine shots at the event.

The event was witnessed by traditional rulers, government officials and representatives of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, WHO, UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates, SOLINA, CDC Afenet. ACASSUS, CHAI & Rotery International among others.
