Former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah has stirred public debate after revealing that many Nigerian lawmakers plunge into financial hardship after their tenure, with some unable to afford their children’s school fees.
Speaking during a public event in Abuja, the former Deputy Senate Majority Leader said the belief that lawmakers live luxurious lives beyond office is far from reality. He painted a grim picture of post-office life, noting that many former senators and members of the House of Representatives now struggle to make ends meet.
“People think lawmakers are rich forever. But I know colleagues who can’t pay school fees once they leave office. We are suffering too,” Na’Allah stated.
He attributed the hardship to lack of sustainable post-service plans and the absence of a productive private sector for former public officials to transition into. His comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians expressing sympathy while others criticized the lawmakers for poor financial planning and the extravagant lifestyle associated with political office.
