War Budget Bombshell: White House Seeks $1.5 Trillion Defence Surge

Borno State Government

The White House has unveiled a staggering $1.5 trillion defence budget proposal, marking what could become the largest military spending plan in modern history as the United States deepens its involvement in the Iran war.

The ambitious request, pushed by President Donald Trump, represents a dramatic increase of over 40 percent from current levels—potentially the sharpest year-on-year rise since World War II.

Officials say the massive funding boost is driven by soaring war costs, the need to replenish depleted weapons stockpiles, and expanded global military commitments.

However, the proposal comes with a controversial twist—plans to slash non-defence spending by about $73 billion, targeting a wide range of domestic programmes in a bid to offset the surge in military funding.

Despite the headline-grabbing figures, the budget remains a proposal and must pass through the U.S. Congress before becoming law—a process expected to trigger fierce political battles in Washington.

Analysts warn the unprecedented defence push signals a long, costly conflict ahead, with the Pentagon preparing for sustained operations as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
