The United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF has launched a groundbreaking gender mainstreaming initiative in Katsina State, aimed at boosting immunisation uptake by involving male parents in routine immunisation and primary healthcare decisions.
Speaking during the launch, the Chief of UNICEF Kano Field Office, Mr. Rahama Mohammed-Farah, represented by Health Specialist Hajiya Saudat Basheer, described the event as a historic moment for immunisation efforts in the state.
“For the first time, we are integrating gender-sensitive programming into immunisation efforts. Engaging men and fathers is critical to achieving Zero Dose and a Polio-Free Katsina,” he said.
The initiative, launched in collaboration with Hajiya Zulaihat Dikko-Radda, Wife of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, introduces the Majalisar Rigakafi program, designed to foster community-led discussions on immunisation, antenatal care, and child nutrition.
UNICEF Gender and Development Manager, Ms. Takudzwa Kanyangarara, highlighted that while Katsina’s immunisation coverage stands at 45%, above the national average of 39%, challenges remain. “Males, as decision-makers, play a pivotal role in overcoming barriers to immunisation,” she noted.
Hajiya Zulaihat emphasized the need for innovative, grassroots solutions to tackle misconceptions about vaccines and limited access to healthcare. “This initiative empowers men and women to drive change in their communities,” she said.
Dr. Shamsudeen Yahya, Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, reiterated the importance of involving male parents in child healthcare decisions, citing research linking zero-dose cases to family dynamics.
The initiative is set to transform immunisation efforts in Katsina, marking a new era in the fight against preventable diseases.
