In an effort to improve education for children affected by insecurity and displacement, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that over 33,500 children in Borno State have enrolled in the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) digital platform this year. This initiative aims to bridge educational gaps and reduce the number of out-of-school children in the region.
During an annual quiz competition held in Maiduguri, UNICEF’s Education Officer for the Maiduguri Field Office, Charles Atiya, highlighted the impact of the program. “At least 33,532 learners in Borno have enrolled this year and have completed at least one course on the platform,” she stated.
The Nigeria Learning Passport is a groundbreaking digital platform providing free, localized educational content accessible both online and offline via mobile devices and computers. It hosts over 17,000 teaching and learning materials aligned with the Nigerian curriculum and global educational standards. Since its launch in 21 states, the platform has attracted more than 800,000 users nationwide, including over 230,000 students.
To support effective use of the platform, UNICEF has trained 425 teachers and facilitators in blended teaching methodologies, ensuring they can guide learners effectively. Atiya emphasized that the initiative is part of UNICEF’s broader strategy to ensure continuity of learning, especially for children in insecure and displaced communities.
Collaboration with the Borno State Government and partners such as Airtel, SILSA, SONY, and FCDO has facilitated the distribution of learning devices, including 270 Samsung tablets, 30 routers, projectors, and offline systems installed in low-connectivity areas. These efforts aim to reach children in Tsangaya schools and other marginalized groups.
Urging students to leverage this digital learning opportunity, Atiya expressed optimism that it would equip children with vital skills for their future careers. The initiative marks a promising step toward inclusive and resilient education in Borno, reaffirming UNICEF’s commitment to transforming lives through innovative learning solutions.
