UNICEF has announced that by 2025, it successfully equipped over 100,000 young people across Borno State with essential digital and vocational skills, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a resilient and innovative youth population capable of shaping the future of education and development.
This milestone was announced by UNICEF’s Maiduguri Field Office Chief, Francis Butichi, during a ceremony commemorating the 2026 International Day of Education held in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The event showcases the transformative impact of UNICEF’s youth-centered programs, aligned with the global theme, “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education.”
UNICEF’s initiatives in Borno have played a vital role in equipping young people with practical skills. Through the Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA) platform, the organization has reached over 11 million Nigerian youths nationwide, offering diverse training opportunities.
In Borno State alone, more than 4,600 youths have received starter packs for vocational training, enabling them to convert skills into sustainable livelihoods.
In addition, UNICEF has facilitated access to digital learning tools and mobile data for over 255,000 young people, connecting more than 400,000 youth with opportunities for skills development and employment. The organization has also mentored approximately 85,000 young individuals, nurturing leadership qualities and career ambitions.
A notable aspect of UNICEF’s approach involves empowering youth as educators within non-formal learning centers. This initiative helps thousands of out-of-school children return to the classroom while providing young educators with valuable experience and skills, thereby fostering community development and social inclusion.
During the event, Mr. Sangkharat emphasized the critical role of youth participation in transforming education systems toward greater inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability. “Together, we can ensure no one is left behind,” he stated.
UNICEF’s Acting Education Manager, Caroline Mwai, highlighted the importance of youth-led initiatives in shaping education policies to support sustainable development. She stressed that young people must be at the forefront of decision-making processes to address challenges such as out-of-school children, poverty, and unequal access, especially in conflict-affected regions like Borno. “Today is a significant day, giving young people a platform to voice their contributions to education,” she remarked. Mwai also commended the Nigerian government and UNICEF’s partnership in expanding learning pathways and equipping youth with 21st-century skills.
As UNICEF continues its efforts in Borno, the organization remains committed to nurturing young minds, empowering youth as agents of positive change, and building a more inclusive and resilient future for all.
