The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) has called for continued collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in its humanitarian operations across the North East region.
This was contained in a statement issued by Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI.
This appeal was made by the Head of UN OCHA Nigeria, Mr. Trond Jensen, during a courtesy visit to the Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Waidi Shaibu, at the Headquarters Theatre Command, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, on 10 July 2025.
Mr. Jensen requested the intervention of OPHK in providing military security to facilitate the safe delivery and effective distribution of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities. He also assured the military that UN OCHA would ensure humanitarian supplies reach only the intended beneficiaries and not fall into the hands of criminal elements.
In response, Major General Shaibu reaffirmed the commitment of OPHK to support and collaborate with UN OCHA to ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian services. He emphasized the critical role of non-kinetic efforts in counter-insurgency operations, noting that humanitarian engagements account for 70 percent of the overall strategy, while kinetic efforts make up only 30 percent.
The Theatre Commander commended UN OCHA for its consistent support, including capacity-building trainings for military personnel. He expressed appreciation for the organization’s dedication to reaching the most vulnerable communities despite resource constraints.
The visit concluded with the exchange of commemorative plaques and a group photograph.
