Kano to Partner with UN on Renewable Energy, Healthcare, and Human Capital Development
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hajiya Amina Mohammed, has showered praise on Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his administration’s bold strides in social development, climate action, and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On a visit to condole with the government and people of Kano over the deaths of elder statesmen Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata and former President Muhammadu Buhari, the UN’s No. 2 official turned her visit into a powerful endorsement of Governor Yusuf’s people-centered policies.
She singled out key initiatives like the solar-powered streetlight revolution across Kano, the groundbreaking establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control — the first of its kind by any Nigerian state — and the state-backed expansion of health insurance to cover the informal sector.
Mrs. Mohammed also commended the creation of Kano’s Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy and the transformation of the Ministry of Environment into the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, describing them as bold institutional reforms in line with global best practices.
“Kano is like a country, and it should be treated as such in terms of development support,” she declared, while urging deeper collaboration between the UN and Kano State. She also hinted at Kano’s inclusion in the upcoming UN Business and Investment Forum.
Governor Abba Yusuf, in his remarks, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strategic partnerships that will transform Kano into a hub for sustainable development, emphasizing readiness to collaborate with UN agencies on education, healthcare, climate resilience, and women empowerment.
“We are building a Kano that works for everyone — a model for others to follow,” he assured.
The visit marks a major milestone in Kano’s growing relevance on the international development stage and underscores the UN’s interest in sub-national partnerships that drive real change.
