UEFA Speaks Out on Controversial Julián Álvarez Penalty Decision

In the aftermath of a dramatic UEFA Champions League clash between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid, UEFA has released an official statement addressing the disallowed penalty by Julián Álvarez.

Atlético had sought clarification over the incident, and UEFA confirmed that VAR intervened because Álvarez’s standing foot made minimal contact with the ball before his actual strike—a violation under Law 14.1 of the Laws of the Game.

While the ruling stood firm, UEFA revealed that discussions will be held with FIFA and IFAB to assess whether the rule should be reconsidered in cases of unintentional double contact.
