Troops Pound ISWAP in Timbuktu Triangle, 22 Fighters Wiped Out

Terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province”,”ISWAP jihadist group has suffered a crushing setback in the Timbuktu Triangle insurgent zone in Borno State”,”northeast nigeria state, losing no fewer than 22 fighters in fierce encounters with Nigerian troops, security sources have confirmed.

The clashes occurred during sustained clearance operations by elite Nigerian Army special forces targeting ISWAP enclaves in the notoriously volatile axis. Among those neutralised were a senior commander, known as a Qaid, and two unit leaders (Munzirs), dealing a major blow to the group’s command structure.

“ISWAP suffered significant casualties during the fighting. A Qaid and two Munzirs were among those neutralised, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the sources said, adding that efforts were ongoing to fully verify the identities of the slain commanders.

Surviving fighters are believed to be fleeing and regrouping in forested hideouts around Bulabulin, roughly 18 to 20 kilometres west of Damboa town as well as near Korengelen, south-east of Azir.

Security officials disclosed that intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations have been intensified over the identified locations and adjoining forests to track and intercept fleeing terrorists.

“The military is maintaining relentless pressure on the remnants of the group through aggressive ground clearance and aerial surveillance,” one source said.

The latest operation underscores the determination of troops to steadily degrade ISWAP’s operational capacity in the North-East and restore lasting peace to communities battered by years of insurgency.
