Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a late-night attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists in Damasak town, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, restoring calm after a fierce gun battle.
Security sources said the insurgents stormed Damasak at about 10:30 p.m., firing sporadically and sending residents scrambling for safety.
In the chaos, three civilians were fatally struck by stray bullets. They were identified as Goni Dauda, 25, of Zanna Umarti Ward; Modu Ya’asham, 32, of Gajiram Town; and Asinamai David, 25, of Bula Kara, Gubio Town.
Another resident, Kellu Bukar, 40, who lives in an IDP camp, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Damasak.
Troops, working in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters, swiftly mobilized to the scene, engaging the attackers in a heavy exchange of fire. The terrorists were forced to retreat with suspected bullet wounds as security forces gained the upper hand.
After repelling the assault, troops secured the area and evacuated the victims. The bodies of Goni Dauda and Modu Ya’asham were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites, while Asinamai David was laid to rest according to Christian rites.
Military authorities confirmed that normalcy has returned to Damasak, with patrols intensified to forestall further attacks.
The attempted raid underscores the persistent threat posed by ISWAP elements in parts of northern Borno, even as security forces sustain pressure under Operation HADIN KAI.
