Nigerian troops have neutralized five top commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and 45 of their fighters during coordinated operations in Borno and Yobe States.
According to security sources, the operation, carried out by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force, marks a major setback for the terrorist group, which has been responsible for a series of attacks in the North-East region.
Reports from counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed that the slain ISWAP commanders were identified as Ari Kolo, Ya Muhammad, Abu Aisha, Hamzalah, and Abu Rijal. They were killed in the early hours of Thursday in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo, and Katarko communities.
Military sources disclosed that the terrorists were eliminated while attempting a surprise attack on the troops’ positions.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, spokesperson for the Multinational Joint Task Force, the military revealed that a total of 62 terrorists were killed during the offensive operations.
He said the ground troops, supported by combat aircraft, launched the assault around midnight, successfully overpowering the insurgents and recovering 38 AK-47 rifles along with other dangerous weapons.
The latest success underscores the Nigerian military’s continued determination to eliminate terrorist threats and restore lasting peace in the North-East region.
