TRIBUTE TO A CHAMPION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: REMEMBERING FORMER IGP SOLOMON ARASE

Katsina state government

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, describing him as a visionary reformer and a steadfast ally in the fight for human rights.

In a heartfelt condolence message signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (OFR, SAN), the Commission hailed Arase as “a distinguished friend of the Commission and a stalwart champion of human rights,” whose reforms left an indelible mark on policing in Nigeria.

During his tenure as IGP, Arase introduced transformative initiatives, most notably the creation of the Complaint Response Unit, which ensured swift responses to public grievances and enhanced accountability in the Nigeria Police Force. He also pioneered intelligence-led policing, upholding the constitutional right to the presumption of innocence by insisting on investigations before arrests — a principle now eroded by today’s practice of “arrest before investigation.”

Beyond his service as IGP, Arase continued his reformist drive as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, pushing for modernization and professionalism in the Force. His legacy, the NHRC noted, has become synonymous with modern, citizen-focused policing.

“Arase’s humility, intelligence, focus, and commitment to human rights inspired a generation of defenders and law enforcement officials. His death is a monumental loss, not only to the Police Force but to the entire human rights community,” Ojukwu said.

The NHRC saluted his enduring contributions and prayed for the repose of his soul, urging his family to find solace in the memories of his exemplary life of service.

May his soul rest in peace.
