Lagos — In a major boost to power supply in Lagos and surrounding communities, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 300MVA power transformer at its 330/132/33kV Egbin Transmission Substation.
The project, completed on February 22, 2025, has increased the substation’s capacity from 300MVA to 450MVA — significantly enhancing bulk power availability for Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to distribute to customers in Ikorodu, Shagamu, Ijede and adjoining areas.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager (Transmission), Lagos Region, Engr. Adeshina Adeonipekun, revealed that the transformer installation was executed entirely in-house by TCN engineers in a record-breaking six weeks.
He described the feat as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission network and ensure more stable and efficient electricity delivery nationwide.
With the added 150MVA capacity, residents and businesses across the Lagos axis are expected to witness improved load management, reduced strain on existing infrastructure, and better power reliability.
The Egbin substation plays a strategic role in evacuating and wheeling bulk electricity within Lagos and neighbouring Ogun communities, making the upgrade a critical intervention for the region’s growing energy demand.
TCN’s management reaffirmed its commitment to expanding transmission capacity across the country, noting that grid expansion projects remain central to improving electricity supply and supporting economic growth.
The commissioning marks another milestone in TCN’s drive to fortify the national grid — one transformer at a time.
