Another decisive operation against public infrastructure sabotage, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspected vandals attempting to steal parts from a power transformer in Ikot Imoh Village, Ikot Abasi LGA.
Acting swiftly on a distress call received at around 5:45AM on Wednesday, July 17, police operatives stormed the scene and intercepted a group tampering with a community transformer. The suspects—Asuquo Effiong, 29, from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, and Chidiebere Onwe, 30, from Nkanu LGA of Enugu State—were arrested red-handed, while others fled into nearby bushes.
Recovered from the suspects were tools typically used in industrial theft: Two 17-combination flat spanners, One hose pipe, A heavy-duty cutter and One pipe wrench with socket.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplices and unravel the full extent of the gang’s operations.
“This arrest is part of our renewed effort to dismantle criminal networks targeting vital public assets,” DSP Timfon stated. “We urge communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.”
Residents of Ikot Imoh have since lauded the police for their prompt intervention, which they say averted a total blackout in the area.
The Akwa Ibom Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, property, and public infrastructure across the state.
