The Borno State Police Command organized an ‘On-the-Job’ training session in Maiduguri to elevate the professionalism of frontline officers and members of the civilian joint task force.
Supported by the Lake Chad Support Framework of the British High Commission, the training focused on improving officers’ skills in various areas, including Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), intelligence handling, confidential informants, and health and well-being.
Held at the Metro Division Headquarters in Maiduguri, the training targeted police personnel from 9 divisions within the metropolis and Jere.
CP Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, expressed appreciation to the donors and reaffirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s dedication to professionalism, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and human rights.
CP Lawal highlighted the vision of IGP Kayode Egbetokun to enhance the police force’s professionalism and adherence to the rule of law, with support from international partners like the Lake Chad Basin Support Framework. The collaboration has led to the establishment of Gender-Based Violence desks across all 38 divisions of the Borno State Police Command.
Elizabeth Macleod, Police Adviser for Lake Chad Support Framework, emphasized the training’s goal of enhancing professionalism among police officers. She mentioned expanding the program to cover various subjects, including human rights and health and well-being, benefitting around 1000 to 1500 officers and partners.
Participants, including members of the civilian joint task force like Muhammed Kyari, expressed enthusiasm for the training, noting its value in enhancing professional conduct during duties like interrogation and arrest. The police-led training, featuring practical exercises and demonstrations, aims to equip a substantial number of well-trained officers across Borno State.
