A heartbreaking road traffic crash along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway has left nine people dead and seven others injured, casting a dark shadow over Friday afternoon travel in Borno State.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 3:30 PM on Friday, July 18, involving a Toyota Hummer Bus belonging to Borno Express and a commercial trailer. According to the Borno Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, speeding was the primary cause, resulting in a fatal loss of control.
Victims of the crash include: Five adult males, One adult female, Two male children and One female child.
Eight of the victims died at the scene, while the ninth succumbed to injuries at the Specialist Hospital Maiduguri, where the injured are currently receiving medical attention.
Sector Commander Usman A. Muhammad extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and urged all motorists to avoid reckless driving and observe speed limits, especially on highways prone to fatal crashes.
“This is a painful reminder that speeding kills. We mourn with the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the swift recovery of the injured,” said Commander Usman.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash, and further updates will be released as findings emerge.
Motorists are advised to prioritize safety and remain vigilant behind the wheel to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
