Red Cross, UNICEF Aid Exercise Turns Fatal at Kasugula Primary School

At least three people have died and 21 others injured following a tragic stampede during a humanitarian cash distribution in Bama, Borno State, on Wednesday.

The exercise, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in partnership with UNICEF, took place at Kasugula Primary School, one of the designated payment centres for distributing N28,500 flat-rate assistance to vulnerable residents.

Eyewitnesses say chaos erupted around 8:00 a.m. as anxious beneficiaries surged toward the school gate, leading to a deadly stampede.

Victims include men, women, and the elderly, with 60-year-old Bukar Labddo of Bukar Tela Ward confirmed dead on arrival at General Hospital Bama. Two others later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

The body of the deceased has been released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites. Humanitarian agencies are yet to release official statements, but the incident has drawn widespread concern and calls for improved crowd control measures during relief interventions.
