A devastating multiple-vehicle crash at Karu Bridge, Abuja, on Wednesday evening claimed six lives and left 14 vehicles incinerated in a raging inferno, police sources confirmed.
The accident, which occurred around 6:58 p.m., was reportedly caused by a Dangote trailer loaded with cement that suffered brake failure while heading from AYA to Nyanya. The out-of-control truck plowed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic, sparking a deadly chain reaction.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror as explosions rocked the area, with fireballs and debris hurtling into the sky. Some wreckage was propelled nearly a kilometer away, causing widespread panic as commuters fled for safety.
Emergency responders, including police and fire service officials, arrived swiftly to battle the blaze and manage the chaos.
Six victims were retrieved from the smoldering wreckage and rushed to Karu Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths. Their remains have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending autopsy.
Authorities continue to investigate the tragic incident as emergency teams work to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy to the area.
