KATSINA — In a horrifying dawn assault, bandits stormed Unguwan Mantau community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least 27 worshippers and leaving many others injured during early morning Fajr prayers.
The attack occurred around 5:00 am, when dozens of Muslim faithful had gathered inside the local mosque. Witnesses said the bandits opened fire indiscriminately, sending shockwaves through the community.
Muhammad Abdullahi, a resident, recounted the chilling moments: “While many faithful were performing the prayers, the bandits came and started shooting. They killed many, including my neighbor. I was lucky I didn’t come out early for the prayers — otherwise, I would not be here telling this story.”
The Kwandala General Hospital in Malumfashi later confirmed the scale of the tragedy. Fatima Abakar, a hospital staff member, told Reuters: “I can confirm to you that we registered 27 dead bodies at the morgue apart from the injured. By this afternoon, relatives had taken them for Islamic burial preparations.”
The attack has plunged Mantau and surrounding communities into mourning, with residents calling for urgent security intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
