Traditional Institutions Under Siege – Says Mahadi Shehu

A Kaduna based businessman and public commentator, Mahadi Shehu has alleged impending onslaught on Sokoto Sultanate.

Posting on his X account, Mr Shehu alleged that in a bold and controversial move, Governor Ahmed of Sokoto state has secured approval from the State Executive Council to push forward a bill that could dramatically reshape the power dynamics within Sokoto’s traditional institutions.

“Set to be stamped on Monday, the bill seeks to strip the Sultan of Sokoto of his long-held powers to appoint, suspend, and transfer traditional rulers, vesting these authorities entirely in the governor without the need for consultation.

“This potential upheaval has sent shockwaves through the Sultanate, raising urgent questions about its future.

“The political landscape is fraught with tension as the Sultanate faces an unprecedented challenge to its authority,” Shehu wrote.
