As political permutations for 2027 quietly heat up, insider whispers suggest President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is eyeing former Kano Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a strategic ally to bolster his northern support base. But critics are not convinced.
“If Tinubu succeeds in bringing Kwankwaso into his camp, it won’t be out of admiration—it’ll be purely for political gain,” a top northern political analyst told our correspondent. “He wants the northern votes, and Kwankwaso is just a means to that end.”
Observers say Tinubu, a master political tactician, understands the arithmetic of Nigerian politics—especially the weight the North carries in national elections. But questions are mounting over whether Kwankwaso truly wields influence beyond his Kano stronghold.
“In the last election, Kwankwaso secured over one million votes—but nearly all of them came from Kano,” the source added. “He’s not a national figure. Outside of Kano, his name barely echoes.”
Analysts believe that while the move may momentarily rattle the political chessboard, it may not deliver the game-changing momentum Tinubu seeks.
“Kwankwaso may be a big fish in a regional pond, but that doesn’t make him a kingmaker at the national level,” said political commentator Bako Adamu. “Tinubu might use him—but the North may not follow.”
As the race toward 2027 begins to take shape, one thing is clear: alliances will be tested, egos will clash, and the real power lies in perception—and persuasion.
