ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the final amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act into law, declaring that the reforms are “not about politics, but about process.”
The President, who assented to the bill at the State House, said the amendments reflect Nigeria’s commitment to learning from every election cycle and strengthening democratic institutions through deliberate legal refinement.
“After every election cycle, we owe Nigerians an honest look at what worked and what must work better. That is how serious democracies behave, and our laws must grow with experience,” he stated.
According to the President, the newly signed amendments are designed to close existing gaps, strengthen procedures, and provide clearer guidance to electoral officials and participants.
“When citizens walk into a polling unit, they must do so with confidence. When results are declared, they must be trusted. That confidence is built deliberately, and not by chance,” Tinubu emphasised.
Observers say the reforms are expected to enhance transparency, reduce ambiguities, and improve operational clarity in future elections — a move widely seen as part of ongoing efforts to deepen democratic credibility in Nigeria.
The President commended the National Assembly of Nigeria for what he described as cooperation and a strong sense of national responsibility in concluding the amendment process.
He noted that electoral reform should never be reduced to partisan calculations but must remain a collective national duty aimed at safeguarding the people’s will.
“Our responsibility remains to keep improving the system so that the people’s will is expressed clearly, peacefully, and credibly,” he said.
