Tinubu Renames Federal University in Azare After Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi

Borno State Government

In a move widely hailed across the North and beyond, President Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Medical Sciences, Azare, as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University of Medical Sciences, immortalising one of Nigeria’s most revered Islamic scholars and elder statesmen.

The announcement, made on Friday, underscores the President’s resolve to honour national icons whose lives were defined by knowledge, discipline, peace and service to humanity.

The late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was celebrated for decades as a towering Muslim cleric, teacher and moral compass whose influence cut across generations, regions and social divides. Renaming a specialised medical university after him, observers say, symbolises the deep connection between knowledge, ethics and service to society.

According to the Presidency, the decision reflects the administration’s belief that institutions of learning should also serve as living monuments to values that uplift the nation. “Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi stood for learning, humility and devotion to humanity. These are ideals that align perfectly with the mission of a medical university,” a senior government source noted.

The university, located in Azare, Bauchi State, is one of Nigeria’s newest federal tertiary institutions dedicated to training medical and health professionals, and the new name is expected to further elevate its moral and academic identity.

Across Bauchi State and the wider Muslim community, the announcement has been met with warm reception, with scholars, students and residents describing it as a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy of scholarship and peaceful coexistence remains deeply ingrained in Nigerian society.

With this gesture, President Tinubu has once again signalled his administration’s readiness to recognise history, honour legacy and inspire future generations through enduring national symbols.
