In a decisive shake-up aimed at restoring police efficiency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers currently deployed to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.
The directive, issued during a high-level security meeting in Abuja on Sunday, mandates that police personnel be reassigned to core policing duties, with a renewed focus on public safety, crime prevention, and rapid response. Present at the meeting were service chiefs from the army, air force, and police, as well as the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Under the new arrangement, VIPs who require escorts or armed protection will no longer rely on the Nigeria Police Force. Instead, they must formally request security support from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which will now take over responsibility for such assignments.
Presidency officials say the move is part of Tinubu’s broader strategy to boost operational readiness and ensure that security agencies prioritize the safety of ordinary Nigerians over elite privileges.
Security analysts describe the shift as a bold reset—one that could return thousands of officers to frontline policing at a time when the nation faces rising security demands.
