President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced sweeping changes in the leadership of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, appointing new Service Chiefs in a renewed effort to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
According to a statement from the Presidency, General Olufemi Oluyede replaces General Christopher Musa as the new Chief of Defence Staff, while Major-General W. Shaibu becomes the new Chief of Army Staff. Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke was named Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes over as the Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.
The President commended the outgoing Service Chiefs for their dedicated service and leadership, urging the new military heads to justify the confidence reposed in them by displaying professionalism, vigilance, and unity in the fight against insecurity.
“All appointments take immediate effect,” the statement read.
The shake-up comes amid intensified operations against Boko Haram, ISWAP insurgents, and armed bandits across the country. Analysts say the move signals a strategic recalibration aimed at injecting fresh ideas into Nigeria’s military command.
Tinubu’s administration has consistently emphasized the need to modernize Nigeria’s armed forces through better intelligence coordination, technology integration, and enhanced welfare for troops at the frontlines.
The new appointments are expected to strengthen coordination among the various branches of the military and improve the nation’s response to growing security challenges across the regions.
