In a bold and pointed remark, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to critics of Nigeria’s growing one-party dominance, likening defectors to survivors escaping a sinking ship.

“I just need to tell those who say a one-party system is no good: you don’t blame a people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jackets,” the President declared.

Speaking with optimism, Tinubu praised the wave of political realignment sweeping through the country, hinting at more high-profile defections to come. “I’m glad for what we have, and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. Welcome to progress; sweep them clean,” he added, throwing subtle jabs at the opposition.

His statement comes amidst a series of high-profile defections from rival parties to the ruling APC, strengthening the party’s grip on national and subnational politics.

Political analysts view Tinubu’s comment as a signal of confidence in APC’s consolidation ahead of 2027, while critics warn of the dangers of weakened opposition and democratic imbalance.
