President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmud Yakubu, as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar, in a new diplomatic posting approved by the Presidency.
Yakubu, who recently completed his tenure as head of Nigeria’s electoral body, is expected to represent the country in Qatar, strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation and diplomatic engagement between both nations.
The move is part of the ongoing deployment of career and non-career envoys approved by President Tinubu to boost Nigeria’s diplomatic presence across strategic missions worldwide.
During his time at INEC, Yakubu oversaw several national and off-cycle elections, including the highly contested 2023 general elections.
Diplomatic observers say his posting to Qatar signals the administration’s effort to tap experienced public officials in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy and international partnerships.
