The Nigerian military authorities have uncovered an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, leading to the arrest of about 20 officers across various formations.
According to Premium Times, a special investigative committee has been set up to probe the detained officers accused of holding secret meetings and expressing discontent with the current government.
Sources told Sahara Reporters that 16 of the officers — including a Brigadier General and a Colonel — were arrested in late September after intelligence reports linked them to coup discussions.
A top military source confirmed that the officers had already picked a date for the planned operation before it was exposed.
“They had planned a bloody coup that targeted senior government officials,” the source said.
The revelation reportedly forced the Federal Government to cancel the 2024 Independence Day celebration on October 1 over security concerns.
A joint investigative panel, comprising the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and DSS, is currently probing what authorities describe as “insubordination and breach of military conduct.”
Although Defence Headquarters has not publicly confirmed the coup attempt, its spokesperson, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said 16 officers were being investigated for misconduct.
Insiders, however, maintain that the arrests are directly linked to an attempt to destabilize the Tinubu government.
Those in custody are being held in a secured military facility in Abuja. Early findings suggest their grievances stem from stalled promotions and failed advancement exams.
Brigadier General Gusau assured that anyone found guilty would face military justice, emphasizing that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain loyal to constitutional authority.
