In a landmark move to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinibu is set to unveil a comprehensive blueprint for the establishment of state police forces across the federation.
Sources close to the presidency say the initiative is part of Tinibu’s broader plan to modernize law enforcement and curb the escalating wave of insecurity—particularly in rural and vulnerable communities. The new framework will provide legal, logistical, and operational guidelines for state governments to set up, train, and manage their own police units in coordination with the federal force.
Speaking recently at a security summit in Abuja, the President said:
“Nigeria must adapt to changing realities. State policing will bring security closer to the people and improve response time to threats and emergencies.”
The proposed model will allow states to recruit locally, ensuring officers have deep knowledge of their terrain and communities. Supporters argue that this will help dismantle banditry networks and restore trust in law enforcement at grassroots levels.
However, the plan has sparked debate. Some critics warn of potential political abuse and funding challenges. Human rights advocates are also calling for safeguards to prevent misuse of power by state actors.
Despite concerns, many governors—especially from regions plagued by insurgency and banditry—have expressed strong support. With legislative consultations ongoing, the unveiling of the state police blueprint is expected within the next few weeks.
If successful, this reform could become one of Tinibu’s most transformative legacies.
