“THIS IS NOT RELIGION” — Muslim Scholars, Shari’a Council Renew Call for INEC Chair’s Removal

Borno State Government

The Council of Nigeria Muslim Scholars has doubled down on its demand for the removal of the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, stressing emphatically that the call has nothing to do with religion.

In a firm and unified position, the Shari’a Council of Nigeria also demanded the immediate sack of the INEC Chairman, citing grave allegations of dishonesty, open bias, and deep-seated hostility toward Muslims.

The councils insist that the controversy should not be framed along religious lines, warning that doing so risks distracting Nigerians from what they describe as the real issue—credibility, neutrality, and integrity of the electoral umpire.

“This is about trust,” a senior figure within the councils said. “Nigeria’s democracy cannot survive if those entrusted to safeguard elections are perceived as partisan or biased.”

The renewed demand has reignited national debate, coming at a time when public confidence in electoral institutions remains fragile ahead of future polls.

As pressure mounts, political observers say the call reflects a broader public insistence that INEC must be above suspicion, insulated from bias, and firmly anchored on fairness—because when elections lose credibility, democracy itself is at risk.
